SymTorrent and Symella for Symbian

Are you familiar with BitTorrent or Gnutella? Now you can have BitTorrent and Gnutella clients on your S60 phones. They are called SymTorrent and Symella. Both of them are open-source projects from Budapest University of Technology and Economics.
If you are not familiar with BitTorrent or Gnutella, they are peer-to-peer file distribution protocol. They are designed to distribute large amount of data widely without consuming too much server bandwidth resource. Both of them are very popular and they have million of users.
Before starting to use SymTorrent or Symella, I would like to remind you three things:
  • Note that there are a lot of illegal contents in peer-to-peer networking. There are some legal and useful contents too. They are distributed via peer-to-peer networking due to their sizes. For example, Ubuntu Linux, the most popular Linux distro, is distributed in BitTorrent network too.
  • Make sure that you have flat-rate data plan or WiFi connection. Peer-to-peer software always eat a lot of bandwidth. Never try peer-to-peer software without flat-rate data plan or WiFi connection!
  • Use a very large memory card, such as 1 GB or 2 GB. If you have Nokia N91, it should be fine because it comes with 4 GB / 8 GB hard drive.
